Tassie IPA

And a belated Happy International IPA Day to YOU!

We celebrated in style with the release of our 'Tassie IPA'. While we are well aware of the fact we are NOT from Tasmania, we curated this recipe to showcase hops grown in that region.

Tasmania is responsible for the production of over 60% of all Australian hops. Not only does Tassie have the cleanest air in the world, it's temperature climate is ideal for the successful growth of hops - with an abundance of fresh water and well draining soil rounding out the trifecta.

We've used 3 main hops for Tassie IPA - Galaxy (we know you've heard of this guy), Ella and HPA-033. Galaxy is probably the most recognised Australian hop, known for a passionfruit punch and citrus characteristics. It also sports the highest percentage of essential oils in the brewing industry - which can be confusing. If you're searching for something to add to your diffuser, this ain't it! Essential oils, within the brewing industry means the aromatic compounds within the hop pellets. The high oil content of Galaxy means it can lead to very intense flavours if not managed during the brewing process.

Ella (Ella Ella) - Sharing the same mother as Galaxy, Ella is what we refer to as a dual-purpose hop, meaning it can be used in all hop additions across the brewing process. Used hot side (during the boil), you get soft florals and spice, added as a dry hop gives you more tropical and grapefruit flavours. Ellas father is a German variety, and that lineage provides the soft florals with a backing of spice (likened to star anise).

Last, but definitely not least we want to introduce you to HPA-033. If you've never encountered a hop product without a name, there's a very good reason for that. HPA (Hop Products Australia) have an extensive hop breeding program, which began in the 1950's. Armed with an extensive knowledge of hops and how to pair plants, they began to breed new varieties with desirable traits. One of the most successful proprietary hops to come out of this program is Galaxy, which was commercialised in 2009. HPA-033 was created in 2003 and boasts a smooth fusion of raspberry & mango, as well as aromas and flavours likened to marmalade. It's been used in brewing trials since 2012 and is in consideration for commercialisation.

Combined, these 3 hops have helped us create a love letter to Tasmania, and showcase hops grown in that region and maybe a couple not known to most! Our Graphic Designer Vincent carried that love across to the label - incorporating the Tasmanian Map, the Tasmanian Devil and also Tasmanian Blue Gum. We hope you enjoy our showcase of Tasmanian Hops - and stay tuned... We may want to turn this into a series!

Tassie IPA is available now on our Online Store, you can pick if up in venue if you're close to Bathurst - or you can check your local bottle shop for stock.
